Summer events incoming! North and East Cornwall dates for your diary (fingers crossed!)

Lockdown is easing and we’re all starting to plan some summer fun! Unfortunately, many events have had to be postponed or cancelled yet again this year, but we’ve compiled a list of those that (at the time of writing!) are still set to go ahead.

Theatrical performances, sports spectating, food and folk festivals… There is still a fantastic array of events happening across North and East Cornwall this summer.

Outdoor performances

Award-winning outdoor theatre company Illyria bring their fabulous production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore to Pentillie Castle this summer on Tuesday 13th July. This open-air performance will take place on the old tennis lawn, overlooking the River Tamar.

Join Miracle Theatre for open air performances of Starcrazy, a cosmic comedy about obsession and the rekindling of love, hope and possibility. They are appearing at a range of venues across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from June this summer, including Bodmin and Boconnoc. Find tour dates and book tickets here.

Watergate Bay has a drive-through cinema, which will be playing ‘Cult Classics from the Cliff Tops of Cornwall’ from the 16th July. The screenings, hosted by surf magazine Wavelength, are located just up the road from the Watergate Bay Hotel. The new drive-in spot has amazing views over the Atlantic, with a clear line-of-sight across Newquay Bay and to the coastline beyond.

Festivals

Rock Oyster Festival is scheduled to go ahead between 30th July – 1st August. Taking place at Dinham House, near Rock, this year features an incredible line-up of music and food including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Nick Mulvey, Dub Pistols and Soul II Soul, alongside pop-up restaurants and chefs demos hosted by Paul Ainsworth.

There’s also foraging, yoga, circus skills for kids, canoe trips, archery and forest schools – something for everyone in the family to enjoy!

Boardmasters is also currently set to go ahead in Newquay this summer from 11th – 15th August. The five-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall; UK surfing mecca, Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay.

Performances will take place across eleven stages, playing host to a world of talent; including local acoustic artists, mind-bending visual performers, and world-class international headliners.  This event is now sold out, but you can sign up for resale tickets on their website.

Cornwall Folk Festival is set to go ahead in Wadebridge from Friday 27th to Monday 30th August. Bringing a wide spectrum of folk-related music to Cornwall, from traditional to contemporary and folk-rock, the main concerts take place at Wadebridge Town Hall across four evenings. These are accompanied by dance and music workshops as well as performances at local pubs.

Cornwall Pride is a celebration of diversity in Cornwall. Now in its fourteenth year, this traditional Pride event includes a colourful and vibrant parade from Towan Beach, Rainbow Fest with an afternoon of live music at Newquay’s Killacourt and a ticketed evening ‘Moonbow’ party. Set to happen on Saturday 28th August, tickets and further information can be found on the website.

North Cornwall Book Festival will take place from 23rd to the 26th September. Booking opens on July 1st and the festival features an amazing line-up of writers, artists and performers. Talks and the evening performances take place in the magical St Endellion Church and workshops are held in the Stone Barn. The Padstow Bookshop provides a range of titles by the guest authors.

Sports

The Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship brings a whole host of golfing icons to the Trevose Golf & Country Club for four days of thrilling golfing action, from 17th to the 21st June

Overlooking the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, legends of the game will take on Trevose’s beautiful course and battle the elements in a truly unique location. Tickets are free for spectators but registration is required.

Watergate Sprint, an action-packed weekend of motorsport set against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean near Newquay, will take place on the 18th and 19th September. Over 100 drivers in a wide variety of cars will be aiming to beat the clock as they climb the hill which winds its way South towards Newquay from Watergate Bay.
