O

Own a piece of history! This character cottage in the heart of St Ives is looking for a loving new owner.

Property in St Ives doesn’t come more steeped in history and character than this! Nestled in the popular Downalong area and just yards from Smeatons Pier and Harbour Beach, this former fisherman’s cottage is looking for a loving new owner.

Gran’s Cottage is currently a well-cared for two-bedroom holiday let which enjoys a sunny, south-facing aspect. This little gem is lighter and more generously proportioned than many Downalong properties.

From the front door of Gran’s Cottage, it’s just a short walk to one of the most picturesque sites in the whole of Cornwall – St Ives harbourfront. In the other direction the family-friendly Porthgwidden Beach awaits, and just a few more steps will take you to Porthmeor Beach – the surfer’s destination of choice.

Cafes, restaurants, boutiques and galleries bring a lively atmosphere to the whole of the town, but regular visitors soon find their own little quiet corners, cobbled streets or grassy spot on ‘The Island’ to retreat to, and there’s always the coastal path beckoning you out of town in both directions.

But, before we get carried away with all St Ives has to offer (take a look at our Location Guide for more on that), it’s time to explore the unique and lovable bolthole that is Gran’s Cottage.

As mentioned previously, the property faces south and is a true fisherman’s cottage, retaining its original character but decorated and furnished to maximise light and comfort.

Entering through a traditional stable door, you’ll find yourself in the bright living and dining room. We love the wood panelling painted a stylish stone colour, which is echoed in the original ceiling beams. Bright white walls encourage light to flood in, and the neutral-coloured carpet adds comfort under foot.

Talking of comfort, there’s a modern, wall-mounted electric heater in the living room to provide a warm glow on chilly winter nights. In the summer you’re more likely be throwing open windows and doors, and soaking up the sounds of the Cornish coast. There’s also a handy nook for the TV and useful under stairs storage in this room.

Like many other similar properties you’ll find on Back Road East, the kitchen is modest but functional, with a pleasant sash window to the front. The walls are partially tiled, work surfaces are granite effect, the cupboards are pine and there’s a four ring electric hob and oven.

Upstairs you’ll find two bedrooms arranged over two floors, with multiple storage cupboards so you can keep these light and bright rooms free from clutter.

On the first floor, the bedroom can be found to the front, and so has the benefit of a south facing aspect enjoyed by a sash window with a deep sill. On this floor you’ll also find the bathroom with a built-in shower cubicle; wash away the salt and sun cream and grab a warm towel off the rail – you’ll be ready to hit the harbourside restaurants and bars in no time!

Tucked away up the next set of stairs is another spacious bedroom, which currently contains both a double bed and a single bed. From this vantage point you can enjoy a super glimpse of Porthminster Beach as the gorgeous coastline stretches away towards Carbis Bay.

Throughout the decor is a mixture of bright white and muted natural colours, maximising light within this old cottage without making it feel too clinical.

We can see why this charming property is called Gran’s Cottage. Comfortable, heart-warming, and simple in its presentation, it has the feeling of a place where special memories are made. Now it’s your turn!

What Did We Miss?

  • Although the property has no allocated parking, it is very close to The Island Car Park, where weekly tickets can be purchased.
  • The property is practically surrounded by stunning sandy beaches – four of the town’s five beaches are within a very short stroll. The fifth – Porthminster – requires nothing more than a pleasant meander through town.
  • Although it is run as a popular holiday let, this could just as easily be a weekend retreat or a permanent residence for someone wishing to downsize and live in a historic part of a vibrant town.
  • Not only does St Ives boast some fabulous restaurants, but you’ll also find everything from health food stores to gin bars. In short it’s heaven for food and drink lovers!
