In our ‘Open House’ revisits, we meet the owners of some of the properties we have sold, to see why they bought them and how life has changed since! Here, Sam Sheldrick invited us to his stunning duplex apartment at the brand new Brunel Two development in Lostwithiel, to tell us why he decided to buy this particular apartment next door to his good friend and how he made it into a successful holiday home.
What prompted your purchase, why was it the one for you?
I was looking at purchasing a holiday home for personal and commercial use, primarily in Fowey, and had started my search on Rightmove.
A friend of mine, Tony, who lives in Fowey said he was buying an investment property at Brunel Two in Lostwithiel, so we went to have a look around.
I instantly loved the fresh modern design of the duplex apartments with their own balcony and thought “I’d love one of these and they are so much better value than Fowey”.
So, on a bit of a whim I spoke to my mortgage advisor and it was all systems go! Harding Laity kept me in the loop throughout the conveyancing process and soon enough I was the proud owner of the apartment right next door to my friend!
What sort of property were you looking for, what was your search criteria?
At least two bedrooms and something that would appeal to the holiday market. I thought Lostwithiel would always be harder work to promote than Fowey, due to it being inland and not as well known, but the standard of property and the towns facilities make it a very attractive place to return to and I already have repeat bookings! I also knew I would get more personal use out of the Brunel Two property.
What particularly drew you to Lostwithiel?
Essentially to be near to Fowey, but as I’ve grown into the town I’ve discovered just how friendly it is! Plus it has amazing quality eateries and shops, and punches well above its weight when it comes to events and occasions such as carnival week, Lostfest, gin fest, Dickensian night and the beer festival to name just a few. It’s amazing what this town puts together for it’s residents.
It’s a great civilised local community all year round, even in Winter. Plus with the railway station so close to hand and easy access to both the A38 and A30, getting around couldn’t be easier.
What was the one thing that made Brunel Two stand out and made you buy this property over other choices?
The fit and finish surpassed everything else I viewed. High spec appliances, above and beyond safety systems, excellent layout, and the outside hasn’t been thrown together either with lovely planting and landscape design. It was all down to the details.
What do you like to do when you visit? Do you have any recommendations for us?
I love Trewithen restaurant in Lostwithiel which is run by a lovely team. They serve fantastic food and a there’s always a warm welcome. Plus, they’ve also just opened a cocktail bar opposite! The Globe is my favourite of several excellent pubs, again great staff, food and beer.
How has life changed since buying your apartment?
Having such a lovely part of Cornwall to go to when its not booked is great, I live in a lovely part of Essex by the river Colne and to be able to travel down to somewhere even nicer is luxurious.
I really enjoy using the sleeper train from Paddington as it drops me right outside the front door! I have family in Cornwall so I also get to see them more, plus friends new and old and I love the pace of life!
