Our Open House Interviews take you into some of the houses we are marketing to see how their current owners feel about living there. Here, we talk to Sabine about living in the “Old Kitchen” a beautifully converted Grade II listed, stylish and sophisticated apartment, set in the grounds of a former hospital, in the sought-after town of St Columb Major.
Sabine tells us,
“I moved to St Columb Major when my girls started primary school. I was looking to purchase a character house, with no through traffic, and within walking distance of the local school, and this property ticked all the boxes!
Being part of a large Grade II listed building, in a quiet area of St Columb Major, the former hospital kitchen, known as the “Old Kitchen”, at Retreat Court offered everything I was looking for in a property: a unique open plan layout with lots of natural light in a beautiful historical building, as well as being close to the town.
Also a big plus for me, was the fact that the maintenance of the outside of the building and garden areas was covered with a monthly maintenance fee, making it an almost “care free” property with straightforward and low financial commitments.
The peacefulness of the place really attracted me too, as well as the prospect of having neighbours around. Retreat Court has a lovely little community of people who look out for each other and having moved from Germany, we didn’t know the surroundings that well to begin with, so this made our move an easy one.
St Columb Major is a lovely thriving town with charming buildings. In the last decade more and more families have moved to this village and some of the listed buildings in town and in the surrounding areas have been renovated and restored. Although popular, most of the residents are full time, so it’s not overrun by tourists!
New shops and Cafés have opened up during the last couple of years, and the people living here give you a lovely feeling of being welcome in the community. We’re also really close to some fantastic local beaches, such as Mawgan Porth and Watergate Bay, which are just a 5 minute drive away,
Our favourite place to visit in the area is definitely Watergate Bay. The beach is stunning with beautiful Rock Pools to explore. We spend hours, and days in fact on the beach enjoying bodyboarding, swimming, playing games, and enjoying coastal walks towards Mawgan Porth or Newquay, or just going for a long beach walk after school. We highly recommend The Living Space at Watergate Bay Hotel for lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, it’s a beautiful place to eat out and relax while watching the sea.
We are planning to move back to Germany for family reasons and will really miss the “Old Kitchen” and Cornwall dearly. I know the new owners will enjoy living there as much as we have as it would make a very happy home or holiday destination for anyone who will live there in the future.”
It was an absolute pleasure to get to know Sabine a little better and find out what her and her family love about their super property in the sought-after town of St Columb Major.
