Kitchen trends for movers and shakers! Read our top design tips for buyers and sellers.

Have you just moved to a great house here in Cornwall, but need to renovate? Or perhaps you’re preparing to get your Cornish property sold and want to achieve the best price? Either way, if you’re interested in new kitchen trends you’ll want to have a read of this!

As Cornish property experts, we’re keenly aware of how fundamental kitchens are to our buyers and sellers. Always the heart of the home, in recent years our kitchens have become the main stage of family life – often doubling up as a school room, home office or workout space!

A question we often get asked by people looking to sell their home with us in the future, is whether they should invest in a new kitchen before bringing their property to market. The answer depends on the kind of buyer the property might appeal to; some buyers will be looking for a turnkey property, others will prefer to put their own stamp on the decor.

One piece of advice we’d give renovators is not to be too slavish to the latest trends as they might not appeal to all potential buyers. We’ve highlighted below the design elements that we think have longevity and broad appeal.

The colour question!

A key trend is for more colour in kitchens, with deep colours of green and blue currently most in vogue. We love this trend – it can be made to work in kitchens of all shapes and sizes and looks especially good when accessorised with brass or gold handles and taps or contrasted with light marble worktops.

Two-tone kitchens are also very popular and are a great way of introducing feature colours and textures in your kitchen cabinetry without taking the plunge on the whole design!

If you want to play it a bit safer with colour, we suggest a more neutral scheme with a larder or pantry (see below), or failing that a feature wall painted in a favourite shade. That way if your potential buyers hate that particularly colour they’ll be able to easily visualize a change.

Natural materials and sustainability

This is one trend which isn’t going anywhere in our opinion! Earthier tones for cabinetry and wood-effect finishes on floors and worktops can be styled in many ways. It can look sleek and contemporary, chic and Scandi, or rustic and homely.

Recycled worktops, eco-friendly flooring and energy-efficient appliances are all positive environmental choices which will appeal to buyers. Complete the look with sculptural pendant lights in organic shapes – perfect for open-plan living spaces.

Decluttering and clever storage

We’ve spent so much time at home recently that decluttering has become a habit! Especially if a kitchen doubles as a living or work space, clever storage is essential.

In recent years the pantry or larder has made a big comeback. In larger properties this may be a walk-in space – the stuff of dreams! This trend for larder space reflects the amount of time we’ve spent at home, giving us the impetus for kitchen projects which demand a bit more space, like breadmaking, pasta rolling or pickling and preserving.

Smaller homes can still get in on this trend with a bespoke or ready-made larder. Integrating small appliances, like microwaves and toasters, into these pieces of kitchen furniture can really help to declutter surfaces.
