Started planning your festive food shopping yet? Us too! This year we’re going all out for Cornish food shopping at Christmas, supporting local producers and filling our fridges and cupboards with really great food at the same time.
So, here’s our Christmas food shopping list, Cornish-style! And yes, we will be going on a diet in January…
The main event
The Martin family of Treway Farm. Image courtesy of Stewart Girvan.
Despite efforts to convince us otherwise, most people still opt for turkey at Christmas. For your Christmas Day centre-piece we couldn’t recommend anything other than a golden turkey from Treway Farm.
This award-winning producer rears traditional-breed turkeys, allowing them to roam freely. Treway Farm turkeys are so delicious you may not even have any leftovers this year!
You can buy Treway turkeys via their website for delivery or collection, and the Martin family attend Truro Farmer’s Market each Saturday where they also sell beef from their grass-fed cattle (you can pick up a turkey from the market but will need to pre-order).
Other meat on our shopping list…
Local pork producers Primrose Herd will deliver to your door ready for Christmas
We always be sure to have a big joint of ham in the fridge, ready for every eventuality. We recommend Cornwall’s premium pork producer, Primrose Herd, for this and other goodies (the Pig’s in Blankets Selection Packs have caught our eye!)
The ultimate cured meats selection! Image courtesy of Figolux.
Also great for those buffet lunches is Duchy Charcuterie. Mark Dennis single-handedly makes a wonderful selection of cured meats, including Coppa, Proscuitto and Bresaola.
For the freshest veggies in town…
Head to your local farmer’s market for the freshest local produce. Image courtesy of Stewart Girvan.
Cornwall has an array of superb farm shops where you can pick up your carrots, parsnips, potatoes and one or two sprouts (a small nod to tradition is fine, no need to go overboard).
Both Helston Farmer’s Market and Truro Farmer’s Market are great if you can time your pre-Christmas visit right.
Make your Christmas food shop a real festive experience at a local farmer’s market like the one in the centre of Truro
Cornish Food Box have a selection of various sizes of veg boxes amongst other things; in fact this food box service is a useful one-stop-shop for all your Cornish food and drink needs!
Cheese, cheese, and more cheese
We love an epic cheeseboard at Christmas – one that you can replenish for days on end!
Thomas Hanson, known across Cornwall as ‘the cheese man’ will deliver a selection of locally-made cheese to your door, plus other favourites from across the UK and Europe. Check out Hanson Fine Foods for the current selection and delivery details.
We also recommend a trip to the Cornish Gouda website, where the flavours available include Italian Herbs and Honey Clover. Delicious!
And finally, sweet treats!
A lovely gift idea from Kernow Chocolate
We keep our chocolate obsession under wraps all year, but all bets are off come Christmas.
This year we’re buying Sea Salt Caramel Truffles from Chocolarder (yes, that is a catering-sized box!) these nifty hot chocolate spoons from Trenance Chocolate, and chocolate bars showcasing Cornwall, which make perfects gifts, from Kernow Chocolate.
